All major Americain and European airlines have
flights via San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Ask
your travel agent, and sheck with carriers who offer special year-round
deals. Certain airlines offer package deals including hotel, golf
and car rental arrangements, while other travel arrangers like Jet
Tour, Kuoni, Tui, Nouvelles Frontières, etc... have special
"golf-package" tours. Be sure to shop around, as prices
can vary as much as 30%, and don't forget to check beforehand on
the quality and location of the hotels where you'll be staying.
If you think that you have the time to check out some of Cafifornia's
best courses for a day or two, it's best to choose a connection
via San Francisco or Los Angeles with a stop-over on either leg
of the journey. Also keep in mind the time difference between Hawaii
and Europe is 11 to 12 hours (depending on the season), and that
most tour operators are more strict with regard to the
first leg of the journey; hence it is advisable to try to avoid
reserving tee-times the day after
your arrival.

CAR RENTALS
During the US school holiday season, it is preferable to reserve
your car upon departure. The rest of the time, car rental companies
are numerous and competition fierce. A little shopping around by
telephone or inquiring with the concierge of your hotel can often
save you a bundle.
All major multinationals are present, as well as a plethora of local
car rental companies. Watch out for the banners offering Jeeps for
5$ or 10$ a day -you'll have to sit through daily two -to three-
hour conferences promoting time-share programs to get such a great
"deal".
WHERE TO
STAY
Just for you, we have made a selection of a few of the finest hotels.
A selection that will allow you -if you've booked through a tour
operator- to get an idea of the quality of the hotel services offered,
or even to reserve in the hotel of your preference.
HALEKULANI
In the very heart of Waikiki, right
on the beach, the Halekulani was created by the famed Robert Burns,
who later went on to preside over the Hongkong Regent and the Beverly
Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Everything here is in proportion
with the prices : top-of-the-line all around. Three world-class
restaurants, piano bar, a magnificent swimming pool and, of course,
the beach. Tropical decor in wood and stone, and massive spreads
of orchids. Double rooms from 2 290 to 470$; suites starting ar
650$ and, why not ?, the Presidential Suite -for those exceptional
occasions- for 4,000$. Something else ?
THE
MANDARIN EX-KAHALA HILTON
Located in the most residential section of the whole island, the
Mandarin Hotel is a haven of beach-side calm. Palm trees shade two
designated sand playpens where children are free to play to their
heart's delight; a giant aquaworld-style pool is home to four majestically
trained dolphins, whose orchestrated aquatic theatrics are a spectacle
all to themselves when it comes time to enjoy dinner in one of the
hotel's three different restaurants.
One specializes in haute cuisine, you mustn't miss breakfast in
the large dining room of the second, and of course the pool-side
grill that serves the best hamburgers on the whole island is a rare
pleasure. Prices range from 270 to 360$ for double occupancies;
beach bungalows go for 560$, and luxury suites at six to 3,000$.
HILTON
HAWAHAN VILLAGE
With a staggering 2,800 rooms, three pools, five restaurants (including
the world-renown "Golden Dragon"), the bold new reference
for Chinese "nouvelle cuisine". The complex is a small
village of charm, boutiques, and the superb "Magic of Polynesia"
show.
Prices range from 175 to 270$ for double rooms, suites from 205
to 3,000$.
All prices above apply strictly for the high season. Shop around
before reserving, and don't be afraid to play the competition :
in some sases you can negotiate exceptionally low rates.
