St Andrews Old Course
The Old Course
St Andrews's Old Course is the oldest course of the world. Indeed,
it is here where golf was played for the first time 600 years
ago!
Until 1764, the course included 12 holes and a round was constituted
by 22 holes. From this date, Saint Andrews Golfers's company decided
to combine certain holes, reducing so a round to 18 holes. Further
to the increasing popularity of this game, greens were enlarged
in 1832.
Although it was redesigned by Tom Morris, The Old Course remains
essentially natural, its arrangement changing relatively little
in 200 years. The wind and the time are in charge of remodelling
it as one goes along, creating dunes in complex forms.
In the absence of the wind, the game remains easy, but the unique
feeling that we feel from the first tee on this legendary course,
compensate the quality of the game.
The New Course
Opened in April, 1895, The New Course was conceived further to
the increasing demand of golf for St Andrews, as well resulting
from inhabitants of the region than guests. The expenses of construction
were paid by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. A civil engineer
of Edinburgh, W Hall Blyth, was engaged to draw the new course.
Result, the New Course is a classical links which uses the natural
abilities of the landscape to create a first class golfique challenge.
